children's entertainment, rejuvenating yoga, and musical
performances and an Off-Broadway review.
Every Thursday "Kids in the Square" kicks off with
fun music and dance, caricature artists, face painting
and more. Our popular "Yoga in the Square" begins at
3:00 PM with classes open to all ages and

| Neighborhood Favorites with Union
Square Park Gardener Debbie Hulse |
|
Each spring USP, in collaboration with the
NYC Department of Parks & Recreation, makes a series
of investments that breathe new life into one of the
City’s most exciting public spaces, Union Square Park.
This season's effort includes planting hundreds of new
shrubs, perennials and annuals. The park's gardener
Debbie Hulse is instrumental in this
effort, lending her green thumb to beautify the
park for all to enjoy. USP caught up with Debbie
(pictured above) to ask her about her favorite places in
Union Square.
Best place for a
workout. I get a lot of my exercise
gardening in the park, but being a member of the
14th Street
Y is great, and I love
their swimming pool.
A place to unwind. The
work we're doing together to upgrade the
southeast triangle of the park has
made it a desired spot to unwind in the mist
of the neighborhood's non-stop energy.
How I get to work in the
morning. I hurry down five flights, down the
block past Washington
Irving High School, then past
the block where Washington Irving once lived, cross
Union Square East & Boom! I'm there in the park in
less than five minutes. My commutes great.
Favorite Greenmarket
purchase. I absolutely love the chunks of hard
maple syrup, especially the ginger flavored one. Good
for fueling up for weeding, mowing, and planting!
A relaxing getaway.
It's peaceful observing people stop and stare
into the Ghandi
Garden for a few minutes. It
feels good to see people stealing a tranquil moment
in their busy day. |
| Outstanding Achievement Honored at
Education Luncheon |
|
USP honored outstanding achievement
in community service, leadership and academics
on Monday, May 19th when the
organization presented Woman's Day
Magazine Editor-in-Chief Jane
Chesnutt, Council Member Rosie Mendez, and four
Washington Irving students with awards and scholarships
at the 15th Annual Education Program Luncheon. "The
children at Washington Irving represent New
York City’s future, and it is a privilege and a joy
to work on their behalf," said Jane Chesnutt. "I thank
the Union Square Partnership not only for honoring me
but also for their strong support of the education
program and the many students it benefits." Four graduating
seniors each received an unrestricted $1,500 yearly
scholarship for up to four years to cover college-rated
expenses. Recipients (pictured above with honoree
Jane Chesnutt and Executive Director Jennifer Falk)
include Jonathan Felix, who received the Union Square
Partnership Scholarship; Cliford Supris, who received
the Jill and Jim Gabbe Scholar Award; Flora Flores, who
received the Claire Chesnutt Scholarship; and Rong
(Andy) Zhang, who received the John & Elaine Kanas
Family Foundation Scholarship. Many thanks to luncheon
sponsor W New York-Union Square, and the luncheon's many
supporters who helped to raise over $100,000 on
behalf of our programs and to support
scholarships. |
