UNION SQUARE PARTNERSHIP ANNOUNCES SCHEDULE FOR 2009 SUMMER IN THE SQUARE
Free Entertainment Every Thursday Afternoon in Union Square Park
New York, NY (May 28, 2009) – The Union Square Partnership today announced the schedule for 2009 “Summer in the Square,” the free, weekly entertainment series in Union Square Park. Running every Thursday afternoon from June 18th through August 13th, the series will offer an electrifying blend of free music and theatrical performances, and yoga and fitness classes.
“’Summer in the Square’ is a perfect opportunity to experience the dynamic programming that makes Union Square one of the most unique districts in the city,” said Union Square Partnership Executive Director Jennifer Falk. “Our 2009 line-up features an increased focus on health and fitness with the addition of the new cardio classes and the return of our relaxing yoga sessions. With the amazing kids’ programming and musical performances scheduled, there’s no better place to enjoy summer in the City than beautiful Union Square Park.”
This season, the Union Square Partnership’s popular “Yoga in the Square” returns beginning at 8:00 AM with classes sponsored by one of the area’s newest additions, lululemon athletica. Classes are open to all ages and abilities, and the sessions, led by Union Square-based studios including, Pure Yoga, OM Yoga, and Prana Power, are sure to relax and rejuvenate participants. It is the perfect opportunity to admire the beauty and serenity of the park. The increased focus on physical fitness, a highlight of this year’s schedule, includes newcomers, Brooklyn Bridge Boot Camp providing cardio classes at 9:00 AM, followed by the McBurney YMCA’s low impact cardio session at 10:00 AM.
“Kids in the Square” kicks off in the park at 12:00 PM, featuring music, dance performances, caricature artists, face painting, and puppeteers for children of all ages. Performances will feature popular kid-friendly acts such as Princess Katie & Racer Steve, Hot Peas & Butter, Baby Loves Disco, Gazillion Bubble Show, Toe Jam Puppet Band, and City Parks Foundation’s Marionette Show Sleeping Beauty.
The festivities continue with “Music in the Square” at 6:00 PM as musicians representing a variety of genres energize the park with live musical and theatrical performances. This year’s performers include Jukebox the Ghost, The Nashville Attitude, Elisa Peimer, and the Broadway cast of “Rock of Ages”.
