This Week's
Construction Update
Continued warm
and dry weather has allowed work to move quickly
on Union Square Park's west plaza.
Concrete foundations have been poured and new
granite curb lines set along Union Square West to
reclaim the muni-meter area south of 16th
Street for pedestrian use. Asphalt
paving stones and new tree pits have also been
installed north of 16th
Street.
Concrete work is also
progressing nicely to the north and east of
the Pavilion. New stairs are being
constructed to connect the main level of the
Pavilion with the north plaza, and walls are
beginning to be visible above ground on the new
restroom facility and maintenance yard to the
east.
Inside the Pavilion, waterproofing of
basement walls will soon be complete and
interior walls for Parks Department offices are
under construction. Mechanical,
electrical and plumbing work will begin in the
coming weeks.

Question of the
Week
Question: What
is going to happen to the 16th Street subway
station entrances during construction on the west
plaza?
Answer:
In order for the contractor
to renovate and install new paving
stones along the full width of the west plaza,
there will be limited pedestrian access to the
subway entrance at 16th Street
for approximately one month beginning
the second week of March. During this short
period of time, one of the two stairwells will
remain open at all times so that access to the
subway will always be possible at 16th
Street.
