This Week's
Construction
Update
Even though winter is
upon us, several warm and dry days over the past
two weeks have allowed work to progress in
Union Square Park since Phase Two began January
5th. Much of the west plaza's
old asphalt has been removed, upgrade of Con
Ed utilities is underway, and the tree pits along
Union Square West have been
excavated.
Warm temperatures at
the end of last week also made it possible
for the contractor to pour concrete atop
the ground floor slab of the future restroom
facility, as well as in the basement of the
Pavilion. Plywood and rebar walls between
the Pavilion and its easterly extension await a
final concrete pour as soon as weather
permits. Next week, crews will begin to
backfill the pit around the restroom facility once
the ground slab concrete is set and
cured.

Question of
the Week
Question:
When will the busy northwest corner of the site
(Broadway at 17th Street) be available again for
pedestrian use?
Answer:
The contractor is working as quickly as possible
to return the northwest corner of the site to
public use. The granite curb foundations
have been formed and await the next dry
period above freezing temperatures in order to
pour concrete. As soon as the concrete
cures, the area can be reopened to pedestrians
crossing Broadway, 17th Street and Union Square
West.
