As we begin the new
year, Phase Two of the North End Project is
kicking off along the park’s West Plaza. Crews are
currently erecting a fence around the last
remaining asphalt parking area, and will soon
begin removing pavement to begin utility trenching
and manhole work. Pedestrian access through this
portion of the park will be maintained along the
eastern side of the West Plaza, and at each of the
two park
transverses.
In other site news,
concrete walls and foundations were poured last
week and are now visible beneath the future
restroom facility. Since the weather continues to
sustain temperatures above freezing and remain
relatively dry, the hope is to continue concrete
slab work in the Pavilion basement into January.
Plumbing installation will continue in advance of
this work.
Finally, waterproofing
of basement floor slabs, walls and the elevator
pit will continue over the next two weeks, and the
contractor should then be ready to begin
backfilling the excavated pit to the east of the
Pavilion by the end of the
month.

Question of the
Week
Question:
How long will the West Plaza be under
construction?
Answer: Beginning
in January, the West Plaza asphalt will be
removed, followed by several weeks of utility work
to provide site drainage and power to the new
light poles. After the utility work is complete,
new granite curbs, concrete foundations and
asphalt pavers will be installed similar
to the North Plaza. The Greenmarket will
relocate to the South Plaza while Phase Two
construction work is underway. All work on
the West Plaza should be complete by April
2009.
