Construction Reaches 25% Completion

This Week's Construction Update

We are excited to announce that construction at Union Square Park's North End has reached the 25% milestone this week!  Remarkable progress can be seen on site as the majority of the north plaza's concrete foundation has been poured and will soon be paved with a new hex block pattern.

Inside the Pavilion, work is continuing to advance on schedule.  A new concrete slab was poured last week to form the base of the main floor of the building, and preparations are moving forward for slab work in the basement as well.  Also last week, the traffic island at 17th Street and Park Avenue South was reopened to pedestrians, and features fully accessible curb cuts for the first time in many years.

Over the next two weeks, work will continue on the northwest corner of the site as the contractor completes a pedestrian access ramp at 17th Street and begins installing a new granite curb along the western edge of the project site.  New curbs will also be installed on the eastern edge of the site  along Park Avenue South concurrently with this work.

Question of the Week

Question:  Will work at the site slow down during the winter months?

Answer:  Although certain types of construction work, such as concrete pours, cease or slow down substantially over the winter months, work on the North End has been phased to continue apace throughout the winter.  Most of the work during that time will be focused on the Pavilion and restroom structures, with substantial attention to the playground and west plaza site work as well.

Correction:  Last week's mention of the Union Square Holiday Market erroneously stated that the Market's opening day will be November 28th, the day after Thanksgiving.  The Holiday Market will actually open on November 22nd, the Saturday before Thanksgiving, but will be closed on Thanksgiving Day.
