One-Of-A-Kind Play Space Thrills Local Kids

Manhattan's newest showpiece, the 15,000-square-foot Union Square Park playground, opened in early December 2009 to the delight of neighborhood kids and their parents.  The new play space consists of three outdoor "rooms" dedicated to children of different age groups, and features state-of-the-art play equipment as well as beautifully landscaped gardens designed by Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates. Happenings in the Greenmarket

Farmers Market

The City's first, largest and most famous Greenmarket takes place year-round, every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 8 AM - 6 PM, and is organized by our partners at GrowNYC, a privately funded citizens’ organization in the Mayor's Office.  The organization supports regional agriculture by providing local small family farmers with opportunities to sell their fruits, vegetables and other farm products to New Yorkers. Consisting of dozens of local farmers, butchers and bakers, the market sets up along the north and west sides of the park. More

Creating A New Northern Gateway

The North End Project is the third and final phase of the park's ongoing renovation includes new trees along the perimeters of the park; repaving the public plazas in a decorative hex-block pattern; rehabilitating the historic Pavilion; electrical and water connections for the Greenmarket farmers, and new public restrooms.

The cornerstone of the project - a new playground, triple the size of the former play space - opened in early December 2009.  At this time, the project is substantially complete and we hope to open the new restroom facilities shortly.  To read the latest construction update and learn more, visit the project website. Our Work in Union Square Park

Over the past three decades, USP has spearheaded a number of park improvement projects, which have ultimately led to the renaissance of the neighborhood.  The organization raises private funds to support a wide-range of projects including landscaping, lawn maintenance, and its largest capital project to date: the North End Project, which included tripling the play space, repaving the plazas, rehabilitating the Pavilion, and adding restroom facilities.  Union Square Park also plays host to a number of USP-sponsored, seasonal events and programs, including Art in the Park, and signature events like Harvest in the Square.
