Keeping our sidewalks and streets clean is a BID priority. Our sanitation team, comprised of nine workers in bright red uniforms, scours the district seven days a week, twelve hours a day to ensure that our neighborhood remains clean and attractive.
Supplementing the services provided by the City's Departments of Sanitation and Parks & Recreation, our crews sweep the sidewalks and remove garbage from over 125 trash receptacles everyday starting at 7:00 AM. They work until 7:00 PM Sunday through Thursday, and until 9:00 PM on Friday and Saturday nights.
The sanitation team also removes illegal signage and flyers, repaints street furniture on an ongoing basis, and removes graffiti from gates and property walls once a week. Powerwashing takes place in the spring and summer. Throughout the winter, they clean the district's sidewalks and intersections of snow and ice.
To address the larger crowds in Union Square Park during warmer months, our sanitation team is enhanced with a special Park Task Force. These four additional team members and one supervisor work solely in the park everyday from 3:00 PM to midnight, April through October, to ensure that the park remains clean.
Our neighborhood consistently receives top scores on the City's Sanitation Scorecard, which is published quarterly by the Mayor's Office of Operations and gauges the cleanliness of streets and sidewalks throughout the City. For the past nine quarters, USP has received 100% cleanliness ratings for our sidewalks!
