Ways To Give Back This Thanksgiving

With Thanksgiving nearly upon us, we’re grateful for the local organizations that work hard to ensure all New Yorkers can partake in holiday meals and festivities. In the spirit of giving, we’ve rounded up some of the best ways that you can give back to your Union Square neighbors and make donating or volunteering part of your Thanksgiving traditions.

If you're already planning on shopping at the Union Square Greenmarket, participate in GrowNYC's  Buy-a-Bag program. On Wednesday, November 15 and Friday, November 17 you can buy an extra bag of fresh produce and donate it at the Market Information Tent on the West Plaza. Donated food will go to City Harvest and the Food Bank for NYC, helping to feed hungry New Yorkers this Thanksgiving.

Each year, Xavier Mission on West 15th Street provides over 4,000 meals to the disabled and senior members of our community on Thanksgiving Day. They need volunteers throughout Thanksgiving Week to help with packing food pantry baskets, cooking, serving, and cleaning. Financial donations are also needed to help cover the cost of meals. Helping to fill the plates of our fellow New Yorkers isn't just an occasion for the holidays. City Harvest needs volunteers year-round to rescue thousands of pounds of fresh produce from the Union Square Greenmarket that would otherwise go to waste. Volunteers collect excess food from local farmers and help load it on to trucks that deliver to soup kitchens and food pantries across the city. Visit City Harvest's website for more details on how to volunteer.

If you're looking to make an impact to directly affect the neighborhood, make a donation to our efforts at Union Square Partnership to keep Union Square active and vibrant year round. Your donation benefits public programming, neighborhood improvement projects, and amenities like more public seating in the warmer months, neighborhood greening and beautification and more.
