Fred Bass, who transformed his father’s small used-book store, the Strand, into a mammoth Manhattan emporium with the slogan “18 Miles of Books,” died on Wednesday at his home in Manhattan, the New York Times reported. He was 89.

Originally on Fourth Avenue's book row, the store was moved by Bass to its current location in 1956. He set the Strand on a path of unstoppable expansion, selling new, used, and rare in its three story space. It's a must stop destination for tourists, a local book shop for residents, and a space for proposals and weddings, author meet and greets, getting lost in the stacks and so much more.
