Just shy of three decades as an iconic staple in Union Square, Coffee Shop will close on Sunday, October 14th. The famous 23/7 diner with Brazilian influences on its menu has made a statement on Union Square West and 16th Street with its neon marquee and outdoor seating since 1990. The restaurant’s three owners Eric Petterson, Charles Milite and Carolyn Benitez were instrumental in strengthening the west side of Union Square Park and adding vitality and vibrancy to the neighborhood. This Union Square institution will truly be missed, and we are thankful for the energy and character that Coffee Shop has brought to our community.
When the former Wilhelmina models opened Coffee Shop, the restaurant quickly earned its spot in the NYC fashion scene. Debuting on the 1990 cover of Women’s Wear Daily and appearing in a high brow profile in New York Magazine, Coffee Shop made a splash as NYC’s trendy late-night hang out, but also stood its ground as a traditional diner. This Manhattan foodie destination was made famous by frequent appearances in HBO’s Sex and the City, as well as The Devil Wears Prada, and Jessica Jones.
The Union Square Partnership is thankful to the neighborhood institution for the role they’ve played in our community. The three owners were especially engaged in revitalizing the district from the start, providing financial support to local Washington Irving High School and, along with Union Square Cafe’s Danny Meyer, championing the creation of the first-ever Harvest in the Square to support USP and Union Square Park.
Since announcing its upcoming closure, the restaurant has been featured in a number of farewell and tribute stories, recounting tales of its early days and the ways that it became a classic NYC and Union Square Institution.
There has also been an outpouring of love and thanks to the iconic USQ eatery from New Yorkers and community members on social media. Have any photos of your crew making memories at Coffee Shop? Share them on social media and tag @thecoffeeshopnyc @UnionSquareNY.
