Union Square Partnership is bringing that 2018 momentum into the New Year, welcoming 2019 with neighborhood developments and ever-expanding district-wide events. The successes of this past year have helped set the stage as we look toward a bold future for the USQ-14th Street Community. Read on for the latest breakdown on exciting USP projects and events, new and upcoming Union Square business openings, and updates on development projects throughout the neighborhood.

Neighborhood Planning + Visioning

With significant change on the horizon for our community, Union Square Partnership is taking this key inflection point in our neighborhood plan for the future of the Union Square-14th Street district. In September 2018, USP launched a collaborative Neighborhood Visioning + Planning initiative, and engaged Marvel Architects to guide the process.

  • Between USP’s 11 Neighborhood Pop-Ups and recent participatory Community Forum, we engaged over 300 community members to discuss neighborhood challenges and opportunities, and identify specific needs in key areas around the district. Read highlights from the forum and see what we’ve been hearing here.

  • Get involved in 2019! RSVP for our second Community Forum on January 28th at 5:30 PM hosted at Xavier High School’s Keenan Commons. Join us to dive deeper into identifying potential projects and interventions in key areas around the district.

L Project Preparations

As the Metropolitan Transportation Authority and NYC Department of Transportation work to prepare for the L train closure before winter comes, USP is working to keep the community informed of construction and changes. Here’s the latest of what’s happening:

  • Construction and vehicular changes began to be implemented on Union Square West and University Place in December 2018.

    • Union Square West between 17th and 16th Streets and 15th and 14th Streets will be closed to vehicular traffic. These blocks will become expanded public space to improve pedestrian circulation.

    • To enable deliveries, pick-up and drop-off, and other access, vehicles will be able to drive eastbound on 16th Street and turn on Union Square West for one block before turning westbound on 15th Street.

    • On University Place, traffic will be reversed between 14th and 13th Streets to southbound only. Vehicles on this block must then turn right on 13th Street.

    • In the spring, University Place will be converted into a shared street including curb extensions, enhancements to pedestrian space for safety, traffic calming measures, and additional bike share capacity.

  • There will be several weekend closures of the L Train in Spring 2019, starting on February 2nd.

  • The L Train Closure officially begins April 27, 2019.
