Continue celebrating nature and sustainability long after Earth Month by showcasing your love for NYC parks! Join the New Yorkers For ParksPlay Fair Coalition to advocate for more funding for parks and green spaces across New York City. The Play Fair Coalition is asking the Mayor and the City Council to direct much-needed maintenance and operations funding to the NYC Parks Department. Although City parks make up 14% of NYC’s land, last year the agency received only 0.59% of the total City budget. You can help spread the word through the Play Fair photo contest - share a photo of your favorite park, playground or green space (Union Square, of course!) and tell us why it’s important to you. Include the park’s name, borough, and #PlayFair to enter the contest. We’ll show you how it’s done:

Union Square Park is by far our favorite green space in all of Manhattan! Union Square’s shady tree canopy creates a place of respite on the Center Lawn, plus stores carbon and removes pollutants from the atmosphere; our five seating areas on the Center Lawn, the West Side at both the 15th and 16th Street Transverses, the West Plaza at the James Fountain, and the Broadway Pedestrian Plaza at 17th Street provide both bustling and quiet spaces for al fresco lunch or an outdoor meeting; the park is home to six historic art pieces including statues of George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Mahatma Gandhi and Marquis de Lafayette, the Saint James Fountain, and the historic independence flag staff; the world-class Evelyn’s Playground provides fun and safe space for thousands of children, and the park’s unique plaza spaces are the best in the city for people-watching and taking in the views of the city.

Looking for even more excuses to come to Union Square Park? Take advantage of Union Square Partnership’s spring and summer events in the park! Kick off summer on Saturday, June 1st at It’s My Park! Day, a celebration of nature and sustainability on Union Square’s Center Lawn. Plus, join us on the South and North Plazas every summer Thursday from June 13th - August 8th for outdoor fitness, kids activities, live performances and movie nights at Summer in the Square.
