The Most Anticipated Shows Coming to Union Square Theaters this Season
Union Square is home to an iconic group of Off-Broadway theaters that are debuting something special in USQ this fall. From Peter Dinklage and a beloved children’s bear, to well-known actors and a Tony-award winning director, there’s a lot to be excited about in the district this season. Last year’s Off-Broadway season attracted close to 75,000 theatergoers to Union Square. Classic Stage Company
April - June 2020
This season, Classic Stage Company will be debuting a ground-breaking show directed by the theater’s Tony-award winning Artistic Director John Doyle. Doyle will helm a production of Stephen Sondheim and John Weidman’s widely popular musical Assassins, a journey through the dark side of American history. This tale of nine men and women who either killed (or tried to kill) one of the Presidents of the United States creates a powerful, yet unnervingly funny look at some of the most shocking moments in US history.
October 10 - December 15, 2019
Tony-award winning Director John Doyle presents a terrifyingly prophetic rendition of Shakespeare’s Macbeth. Often referred to as “The Scottish Play” by superstitious theatergoers due to the purported witchcraft found within its text, Macbeth is one of Shakespeare’s bloodiest, scariest, and yet, most popular tragedies.
Dracula + Frankenstein
January 14 - March 8, 2020
Classic Stage Company will round out its new season with a pair of major works of gothic horror: Dracula and Frankenstein, opening January 2020.
Daryl Roth + DR2 Theatres
October 11 - December 22, 2019
Game of Thrones fans will soon be flocking to Union Square to see Peter Dinklage star in Cyrano at the Daryl Roth Theatre. The musical, directed by Erica Schmidt (Peter Dinklage’s wife), will premiere at the Daryl Roth October 11th, and run through December 22nd. This contemporary take on a classic 17th Century love story will include music and lyrics by members of the rock band the National.
Paddington Gets in a Jam
December 13, 2019 - March 6, 2020
The beloved children’s storybook character Paddington Bear is making his New York stage debut at the DR2 Theatre. Brought to you by the creators of The Very Hungry Caterpillar Show that ate its way through Union Square last year, Paddington Gets in a Jam will make its debut in time for the holidays, on December 13th. Bring kids - or nostalgic adults - to see Paddington making his famous marmalade and of course get into some hysterical trouble.
Is This A Room
October 3 - November 10, 2019
This fall, The Vineyard Theatre is debuting a timely, bold new play called Is This A Room. Directed by Tina Satter, this play tells the true story of an FBI interrogation of a 25-year-old former Air Force linguist currently in prison for leaking a top-secret report containing evidence of Russian interference in U.S. elections. The show debuts on October 3rd and will run through November 10th.
Witness the New York Premiere of this harrowing true tale of Dana Higginbotham, held captive by an ex-convict looking for redemption. Told in Dana's own words and reconstructed for the stage by her son Lucas Hnath, “one of the freshest playwriting voices to emerge in the past five years” (The New York Times), this innovative work shatters the boundaries of the art form and our understanding of good and evil.
Tuvalu or, The Saddest Song
With an astonishing mix of humor, tenderness, and theatrical daring, this coming-of-age story follows twelve-year-old Jackie as she navigates life in LA in the nineties, amidst private school, Momma’s boyfriend, and the OJ Simpson murder trial.

"Ominous Men" is a dark play about race, poverty, drugs, misogyny and violence in America told through a gothic horror and magic realism lens. Three men are confronted by their ferocious pasts in the abandoned derelict Concourse Plaza Hotel basement on July 13, 1977. This night of drinking, camaraderie, and “Bones” turns violent when the NYC Blackout hits the Bronx.
