Public Art
Union Square has long been a canvas for creative expression. From historic sculptures to contemporary installations, public art here is always evolving—reflecting the neighborhood’s unique character, culture, and community.
Permanent Art in the Park
Union Square Park features some of New York City’s most recognizable public artworks, including statues of George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and Mahatma Gandhi, as well as the Independence Flagstaff. These longstanding pieces offer a glimpse into the park’s rich civic and cultural legacy. Learn more about the sculptures and monuments on the NYC Parks highlights page.
Temporary Public Art Installations
Throughout the year, Union Square hosts temporary public art installations that bring fresh, thought-provoking works to the district. These installations are often created in partnership with local artists and organizations, offering new opportunities to engage with art in public spaces. Artists interested in showcasing their work in Union Square can learn more about how to partner with us in our Public Art Guide.
Annual Mural Installation
Each spring, Union Square Partnership, together with the NYC Department of Transportation Art Program, commissions a local artist to create a large-scale street mural on 14th Street between University Place and Broadway. This mural spans over 7,500 square feet of sidewalk extensions on both sides of the 14th Street busway, transforming one of the city’s busiest pedestrian corridors.
